Petrol or Diesel?

One of the most common requests I receive is, “Please find me a car which runs on diesel.”

Diesel-powered engines may be more fuel efficient, but there are two factors against them:

1) Diesel fuel costs more than petrol

2) Petrol cars are often much cheaper to buy than the diesel equivalents

My basic rule of thumb is that if you cover less than 10,000 miles a year, you may actually be financially better off with a petrol car.

Of course this depends hugely upon the model of car, its age and your driving style. It is always best to first work out the fuel economy (www.parkers.co.ukwill list this) and then have a look at the difference between the prices of petrol and diesel models using a website such as www.autotrader.co.uk.

And finally, don’t forget to consider the resale valueof whatever you buy – a petrol-engined Jeep may sound like the bargain of the century if you don’t cover many miles a year, but good luck trying to sell the beast again when you are done with it!

Hope you are fueling well…
