NEGOTIATING What Size Discounts to Expect

Few things in life are more satisfying than getting something cheaper than you expected.

But the big question is: what size discount should you expect on a used car? Hundreds? Thousands?

The Past...

Towards the end of last year, people were buying very few used cars, so car dealers were having problems shifting their stock.

We had a field day! It was not uncommon for us to negotiate discounts of more than 10%.

The Present...

The market has changed hugely.

As warned in one of the March's newsletters, for most (but not all cars) prices have actually risen. This is due to a major lack of used car stock.

I spoke with a Skoda dealer yesterday who is supposed to have 45 used cars in stock. They currently have just 16 for sale, so as you can imagine, they weren't too eager to let me buy one of their precious cars at a bargain 'trade' price.

The Figures...

Generally, for most cars priced under 10,000, you will be hard pushed to get much more than a 500 discount. For cars between 15,000 and 25,000, if you get 1,000 off, you are doing well.

This will vary greatly depending on whether the particular make, model and specification you are after is in short supply or not. Of course, you can still get lucky, so remember the key rule...

If you don't ask, you don't get!

Dom Duroux's old Audi Quattro Sport

Built for Hill Climb racing, my good friend Dom's old Audi Quattro is the scariest car I have ever driven. His very rare short-wheel-base 'Sport' pushed out an estimated 550 BHP and although he modestly claimed 0-60 MPH in an eye-watering 3 seconds, I actually think it was much much faster. And, yes, it was used on the road too!
