NEGOTIATING Haggling for New Cars

OK, yes. This newsletter is about buying NEW cars.

"What is going on here, Ash? You always preach that new cars are a waste of money?"

Don't worry! I still believe that in 99% of cases a new car is a waste of money, but some people don't want anything else. Take my very own mother, for example: an absolutely amazing woman, but every 3 years she goes and buys a brand-new Nissan Micra. (Oi vey! Where did I go wrong!?)

The good news is that negotiating on a brand new car is easy:

STEP 1

Call up the nearest dealer to you that supplies the make you want, and ask for 'New Car Sales'. Give them the precise specification of the car and tell them that you would like the best 'On The Road' price they can offer, including delivery to your home.

Now here's the important bit... Then tell them that you are calling a few other dealers to get some other prices, but tomorrow you will place the order with whoever is cheapest.

STEP 2

Call up another dealer, somewhere else in the country (find one on the manufacturer's website), and do exactly as you did in Step 1. EXCEPT, if they give you a higher price, just say, "Oh, that is a shame, so-and-so dealer quoted me £xx,xxx." They will either then drop their price or tell you that they cannot help.

STEP 3

Repeat Step 2 until bored (though I would suggest calling around 10 dealers).

STEP 4

Place the order with the dealer who has offered you the lowest quote. If there are a couple of very similar prices, choose the dealer you liked the most.

Don't forget that brand-new cars are all identical, so it makes no difference if you order the car from a dealer around the corner or one in Scotland, as long as they are prepared to deliver the car to you (and virtually all of them will).

Normal 'used car buying' advice will resume next time!

PALMDALE'S BARGAIN
OF THE WEEK

New MINI Cooper
Brand-New MINI Cooper

The brief:
"I am about to order a brand-new MINI and have been offered a £350 discount by my local dealer. Can you do any better?"

How much it should have cost:
'On The Road' List price = £15,305

We ordered it for = £13,800!

WHY I LOVE THE...

Mercedes SL
Mercedes SL (2002-08)

I'm actually a little embarrassed about this one. Mercedes 'sports' cars (and I use the term loosely) are not cool. They are just flash. I generally do not like Mercedes but the SL is comfortable, very well equipped and looks great. But what really gets me is that if you drive one of the big-engined models 'enthusiastically' it is easy to imagine that you are in an American Muscle Car. (I'm going to burn in car hell for writing this!)
