Fairly regularly, potential clients will ask me, “So, do you buy cars from auctions?”
And my response is always the same, “Actually, auctions are the one place I refuse to buy cars from.”
Now, you may be thinking, “Whoa, whoa, whoa! Hold your horsepower! I thought that is where all thebest bargains are..?”
Sorry. No. And for three reasons:
REASON 1: WHY YOU SHOULD NEVER BUY FROM AUCTIONS
The real, proper auctions are by invitation only to certain people in the motor trade. Public auctions have too many private bidders driving the prices up, which doesn’t help keep costs low.
REASON 2: WHY YOU SHOULD NEVER BUY FROM AUCTIONS
This is the big one…
At Palmdale we spend a lot of time and energy making sure that the cars we buy for clients are insuperb condition. When buying from an auction there just isn’t enough time to check out a car properly.
Added to that, auctions are where dealers often send their rubbish cars – the ones that they don’t feel are good enough to sell on themselves.
(SPECIAL NOTE FOR CHRIS EVANS (Radio DJ) – Don’t worry, Chris, this doesn’t apply to top-end classic car auctions, so I’m sure that the Ferrari 250 GTO you recently won at auction for £12m is fine.)
REASON 3: WHY YOU SHOULD NEVER BUY FROM AUCTIONS
A lot of auction cars are not even that cheap at present. Everyone in the motor trade is fighting for stock, which pushes prices right up.
And this will continue as long as the current used car drought carries on.
